Gun Violence

Just two days ago at Virginia Beach in Virginia another 12 people were killed by a gunman. So many. This is making really religious people out of the House, the Senate and the Whitehouse. Every time a new tragedy like this occurs our politicians send their thoughts and prayers. But, they choose to do nothing. They refuse to do anything. They are paralyzed by an asinine interpretation of the 2nd Amendment and by the National Rifle Association that propagates this peculiar, and deadly, interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.

So what about this dreadful interpretation of the 2nd Amendment? The 2nd Amendment is intended to ensure that the nation will no longer be threatened by overwhelming powers such as the British displayed during the years prior to and during the Revolution. A big question at the time was whether or not we should even fund and support a standing army. For the more cynical at the time, the 2nd Amendment was put in place to throw off America’s own government should it too become tyrannical.

We do have a standing army now and indeed we have more fire power than any other country in the world. The circumstances that gave birth to the 2nd Amendment no longer exist. If our leadership becomes autocratic, tyrannical, fascist, or any other form of abuse of power (hmmm), then all of the guns the local populations have will not be adequate to make much of a difference at all. God forbid the military were to decide to run a coup d’état. Local militias would stand no chance against an army take over of our government. No matter how many guns we own.
